e-Truck Transportation Modifies Used Class 8 Trucks with Hybrid System
eTruck Transportation, a family-owned company in Omaha, Nebraska, is introducing a solution to reduce carbon emissions in the commercial transport sector. Spearheaded by CEO Judith Knudsen, the company retrofits used Class 8 trucks with a hybrid electric system, which replaces the large diesel engine with a smaller Rolls Royce diesel engine, a generator, an electric motor, and battery packs.
The smaller diesel engine charges the batteries, which power the electric motor, and allows for long travel without having to stop for charging. eTruck claims this approach cuts fuel costs and emissions by about 75% compared to traditional diesel trucks, while offering a more cost-effective alternative to new battery-electric trucks. The company is also developing fully electric Class 8 and Class 6 versions and offers an optional aerodynamic redesign for the trucks.
